Call us crazy, Landsdowne, but here we go again. We are just full of things to say --
  • A huge Thank You to our good Samaritan who shoveled the Morning View Lane marquee. Your kindness is appreciated more than you know! The "good words" are being posted once again. Thanks also to all the many volunteers who have taken time to shovel parts of the sidewalks and walking path.
  • Sadly, the tennis courts are closed once again (until the next snow) for dog play. It truly was fun while it lasted. We would love to have you post pictures on the web site or your pets in the snow.
  • Do you have suggestions for gutter repair providers, roofers, handyman services, electricians, plumbers, carpenters, maid services, snow shovelers, landscapers, baby sitters, house sitters, etc. -- any service that would be of benefit to others here at home? If so, please add them to our web site (Business Directory) or send them along to info@landsdowne.org  and we will include them for you. Please include the type of service, all related contact information and if they have a web site, those details, too.
  • The inside of the pool house is undergoing a minor facelift to be ready for the pool opening in May. We would love to include pictures of Landsdowne -- the sights and the people. Please send your pictures (.jpg format) to SpecialEvents@Landsdowne.org . We will print them, frame them, perhaps make giclees, and give artistic credit to the photographers among us. Kids and Adults, show us your talent! If you want to participate and don't have a camera, please contact Manny Ovalle,(president@landsdowne.org) or any Board member (add resses found on the web site Contact Us Page). We have disposable cameras to lend and will pay the processing charges. All you need to do is take the pictures. This might be a wonderful way to introduce kids to the fun of photography.
  • New Surveys are coming to the web site on Monday, March 1st. If you have not had time to complete the ones posted, please do so this week. Our future planning will be based in part on those results.
  • Plans are in the works for a Recipe Club and also a Garden Club --- watch the web site and future email blasts for details.
  • Tree and shrub damage is everywhere. One casualty of the snows -- broken and downed trees. The branches in many cases just could not take the weight of the snow and ice. If there are trees located on common ground in need of attention or removal, please send the location to us as soon as possible so we can add them to the list for attention early this spring. Landscaping@landsdowne.org
  • Trees and shrubs located on your own property may also be in need of attention. If the plants are of a size that you can work on them yourself (shrubs and smaller trees), you can use a sharp set of pruning shears or loppers to remove the broken branches. Make a careful, clean cut back to the next living bud along the broken branch. Small shrubs with a fair amount of damage may be reduced after pruning, to a fraction of their former selves in your garden. Although storm damage by itself will not often kill your plants, you might want to consider replacing them if drastic damage has unacceptably altered the look of your landscape. If you have questions concerning proper pruning, dressing the wounds, etc. please feel free to send us an email.
Rumor has it, more snow may find us later this winter. For now, please enjoy the slightly warmer weather and sunshine. Spring, Summer and outdoor activities will soon be here. The full list of 2010 activities will be posted on the web beginning March 1st. Here are a few things coming up soon.
  • Monday, March 15th -- 7 pm -- The award winning Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Team that was dispatched to Haiti (and many other disaster areas) will be giving a free presentation concerning their efforts. Location: Fire Station #5, 6300 Beulah Street, Alexandria, VA. Everyone is welcome.
  • Wednesday, March 24th -- 7:30 pm. March HOA/Board Meeting. Kingstowne Center for Active Adults (6488 Landsdowne Center, next to the Library). Please note, this is a change in date
  • Spring Community Yard Sale -- Saturday, April 24th -- 8 am to Noon. (Contact Atlarge1@landsdowne.org) for space reservations and information.
  • Dumpster and Shredding Day -- Saturday, May 1st -- 8 am to Noon
Who knows what the rest of winter will bring. The grass is back in many cases. Flowers will soon be here. It has been a winter to remember. Spring and summer will promise more wonderful memories. Thanks everyone, for making Landsdowne, the place we love to call home.
